Thesaurus Thursday: Cattle Guard

Word of the day: Cattle Guard; A structure consisting typically of parallel bars over a shallow ditch, used to prevent cattle from straying.

The "word of the day" is chosen by me and usually has something to do with my day. This is an "increase your vocabulary activity"

Play the game like this: Open up a thesaurus on-line. Type the word of the day in the search bar. Using the generated words write a sentence, paragraph, poem, story; anything you choose using at least one of the generated words.

The thesaurus did not generate any synonyms for "Cattle Guard", but my daughter told me a joke about one that had me in stitches:
A few months ago, President Obama received and was reading a report that there were over 100,000 cattle guards in Colorado. The Colorado ranchers had protested his proposed changes in grazing policies, so he ordered the Secretary of the Interior to fire half of the "cattle guards" immediately!

Before the Secretary of the Interior could respond and presumably try to straighten President Obama out on the matter, Vice-President Joe Biden, intervened with a request that...before any "cattle guards" were fired, they be given six months of retraining for Arizona "border guards". 'Times are hard', said Joe Biden, 'it's only fair to the "cattle guards" and their families!'

And these two guys are running our country!

Every time I hear this joke I die laughing
. . . and every time I cross a cattle guard I think of President Obama.

Little Bear is afraid to cross the cattle guard too . . . .

have a good one

Wednesday Wanderings: Back in the Saddle

I'm on a roll . . . three posts in a row :) whoo hoo!

The weather here has been gorgeous. We are enjoying a beautiful Indian Summer. The kids are still playing in the sprinklers, riding their bikes, chasing insects and jumping on the tramp. It was such a long cold spring I'm glad for a little extra summer as we head into fall.

I dug into the archives for today's picture. The girlies three had a chance to go for a few horse rides this summer. They love horses and wish they could have one of their very own.

All horses deserve, at least once in their lives, to be loved by a little girl.

"Your everyday activities make for some very inspiring stories that riddle a letter with fun and intrigue. Therefore, both kinds of letters, friendly and autobiographical, are well appreciated by grandchildren. The only thing that really matters is that you pick up the pen . . . and write!"

Monday Movies: The Great Caper

Monday Movies hosted by Molly at the Bumbles

Today's movie topic is all about heists and capers . . .

Molly listed Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid--one of my very favorite films

So I thought I'd make a post about another Redford/Newman film

The Sting

When a mutual friend is killed by a mob boss, two con men, one experienced and one young try to get even by pulling off the big con on the mob boss. The story unfolds with several twists and last minute alterations.

Ahhh . . . Newman and Redford, gotta love 'em

There and Back Again, A Year's Pictorial Journey: Week 39

You might remember that last year about this time we had a visit from President Bush. He likes to hunt at a local hunting reserve. This year he came to hunt Elk. My daughter-in-law works at the airport and her boss sent her to pick up some KFC for the President and his party. So once again my son and his wife got to get up close and personal with former President George W. Bush.

(Sept. 19)
I did not take this picture but I thought I'd like to share it anyway

My week was pretty dull--but necessary
I was in recovery mode from an episode with sepsis that landed me in ICU for 2 days
and the medical floor for two more days.
I'm just glad I lived to tell the tale.

so my week was spent pretty much in my bed
or in my easy chair
watching TV
Luckily it was premier week

(Sept. 20)

Monday--Hawaii Five-0
Tuesday--NCIS
Wednesday--Survivor (It's gonna be a fun season)
Thursday--Ever After (movie)
Friday--I Am Legend (movie)
Saturday--BYU Football

You know, I really like the movie "I Am Legend".
Will Smith's Portrayal of Dr. Robert Neville in the film is outstanding.
The movie is well done and a creative re-invention of the original story.
I did also enjoy the book
"I Am Legend" and Other Stories by Richard Matheson.
The movie and the original story have different takes on why Dr. Neville is considered a legend.
I think I enjoyed the original a little bit more.
If you haven't read it, you should--
It would be a perfect Halloween read.

Speaking of reading, my head has been so fuzzy--
it's been three weeks since I've read anything.
My kindle is lonely :(
but I did see on the kindle blog that scrabble is now available to play on the kindle
maybe I'll see if that will help the time pass.

p.s.  If you have a kindle you should follow the kindle blog--It keeps you updated on new arrivals, and sometimes an author will offer a free or reduced price on one of their books.  I've gotten several that way.

Thanks for all your well wishes and concern

There and Back Again, A Year's Pictorial Journey: Week 38

The best six doctors anywhere
And no one can deny it
Are sunshine, water, rest, and air
Exercise and diet.
These six will gladly you attend
If only you are willing
Your mind they'll ease
Your will they'll mend
And charge you not a shilling.

-- Nursery rhyme

It wasn't the flu--
I've been ill this week
but, I'm on the road to recovery

I'll be out for awhile

And it shall come to pass in that day that the Lord shall give thee rest, from thy sorrow, and from thy fear, and from the hard bondage wherein thou wast made to serve.

There And Back Again, A Year's Pictorial Journey: Week 37

And what a week it was!

I spent Monday thru Thursday firmly caught in the nasty fist of the flu
so my advice to you

When I got my camera out I only had one picture on it

sweetings must have paid me a visit at some point during my delirium
or maybe I dreamed it . . . but there it is in digital memory

before the flu hit me on Monday night I did get my daughters bedroom re-purposed

It's now my sewing room
the little girls want me to sew nightgowns
I want to make baby clothes and quilts
but my first project, believe it or not, will be altering a wedding dress for my friends daughter.
LOL!

Oh and on Friday the appliance repairman came
my dishwasher is now working
Hooray!
(that's better than the $800+ it would have cost to replace it)

Today is Saturday Sept. 11th, no picture but

I made a post about where I was on Sept. 11, 2001 here

also a movie you might enjoy watching today is "Remember Me"

guest judging continues

I've been guest judging for the August Photohunt hosted by Kristi this week. I posted my last category today "strength"

Here's a picture I took this summer that speaks to me of strength. It's my grandson hitting a baseball. He's a pretty good hitter. It takes some strength to swing that bat and send that ball flying

You can visit the web site, view all the categories, and vote for three in each group.  Voting is open until the end of the month.  The next hunt will be in October.  If you like to take pictures you should join--it's fun.

Guest judging this week

I volunteered to guest judge for the August Photo Hunt hosted by Kristi so I didn't participate.

I've posted my first list of favorites "something comfortable". You can hop on over and vote for three of your favorites. I looked through my archives and found this picture of something that I feel gives me comfort.

Book Review: The Sweet Far Thing

The Sweet Far Thing

by

Libba Bray

Kindle Edition, 832 pages

Published July 1st 2009 by Simon & Schuster Children's (first published December 26th 2007)
literary awards: ALA Teens' Top Ten (2008)

About the Book:
It has been a year of change since Gemma Doyle arrived at the foreboding Spence Academy. Having bound the wild, dark magic of the realms to her, Gemma has forged unlikely and unsuspected new alliances both with the headstrong Felicity and timid Ann, Kartik, the exotic young man whose companionship is forbidden, and the fearsome creatures of the realms. Now, as Gemma approaches her London debut, the time has come to test those bonds. As her friendship with Felicity and Ann faces its gravest trial, and with the Order grappling for control of the realms, Gemma is compelled to decide once and for all which path she is meant to take.Pulled forward by fate, the destiny Gemma faces threatens to set chaos loose, not only in the realms, but also upon the rigid Victorian society whose rules Gemma has both defied and followed. Where does Gemma really belong? And will she, can she, survive? (Good Reads)

About the Author:
Libba Bray is the author of the New York Times Bestselling novels A Great and Terrible Beauty and Rebel Angels.  She has never lived in the Victorian era, is not British, and has no superpowers, though if she did they would involve being able to eat her weight in Swedish fish without feeling the urgent need to shave her tongue afterward.  She lives in Brooklyn, New York, with her husband, their son, and a cat of questionable intelligence.  Feel free to visit her at her web site, http://www.libbabray.com/. (from the book)

my thoughts:
I have mixed feelings about "The Sweet Far Thing".  I loved the story.  I loved Gemma the protagonist. I loved Kartik--her soul mate.  I loved her best friends Felicity and Ann.  I loved how this story took place in two different settings as Gemma and her friends traveled from the real world to the magical realms and back.  I loved the dark, occult element that was in such contrast to the Victorian lifestyle of the girls.  I absolutely loved the battle sequence, and the Gorgon was my favorite mythical creature.  I imagined several endings for this book as the story rolled to its climax.  But I can honestly say I was blind-sided at the end.  I just didn't see it coming.  It took me a few days to think about it, but I have decided that it was a good ending and it left me hope that the story could continue and happiness was in Gemma's future.  I enjoyed the series as a whole, with a few exceptions.  It  was all very imaginative, original and intriguing.

I do feel like I need to mention those things I didn't like.
1. Lengthy--As often happens when a series is winding down the author clings to glory and stretches the story unnecessarily.  For a good chunk of this book I felt like I was wading through mud and had to force myself to continue.
2.  Subplots--I've read a number of series where the author develops subplots that don't really have anything to do with the main plot of the story--I felt this way about Pippa's story.  It just wasn't necessary.
3.  Soapbox--I just hate when an author uses a story for a personal soapbox , the voice of the character is lost, another voice takes over and there we are--an author on a soapbox.  (This one was women rights).
4. Blasphemy--I was particularly disturbed by the blasphemy in this book and had to skip a chapter or two.  There was a little at the end of Rebel Angels, but this book had chapters that were downright offensive if you sincerely believe in Christ.  Pippa was a beloved character through most of the series but by the end I dreaded the mention of her name.

There were quite a few passages from the book that were thought provoking, I enjoyed the style of this author's writing very much.

"Greatness lies in even the smallest of moments, in the humblest of hearts, and we shall, each of us, be called to greatness. Whether we shall rise to meet it or let it slip away is the challenge put before us all."

"Peace is not happenstance.  It is a living fire that must be fed constantly.  It must be tended with vigilance, else it dies out."

location 4365 on my kindle

"Power changes everything till it is difficult to say who are the heroes and who the villains, and [power] itself is neither good nor bad; it is intent that makes it either."

location 5316 on my kindle

"But the past cannot be changed, and we carry our choices with us, forward, into the unknown.  We can only move on."
