Summer Stock: the corner candy story

what says summer more than a candy run to the corner grocery store?

When I was a kid we would collect the glass pop bottles, load them up in the radio flyer and haul them down to the Blue Cut Service where we would exchange them for a few dimes.  Then we'd turn around and spend every bit of it on candy and pop.  Good Times!

For my kids Guido's was the hot spot.  Guido was a nice little Italian man that patiently took their pennies and filled up their brown paper sacks--most of the time he would slip in a few extra pieces.

This picture is of my grand kids at a little mom and pop store in an old mining community called Helper.  I wonder what they will remember as their "candy stop" when they look back.

The more things change, the more they stay the same isn't it?!

I remember when we lived in NJ when I was about 7 we lived within walking distance of an old fashioned penny candy store. We loved traipsing over there to spend all our nickels and dimes. The best part was the shortcut took us right past the fire station and every now and then the firemen would let us check out the engine trucks.

It truly is a sad shame that the Five and Dime stores don't exist any longer. When my brother and I visited my Grandparents we would always go downtown to the 5&10 and fill up our brown bags to the brim!

They're so cute, enjoying their candy.
My favorite was the ice cream man. We'd hear his musical truck and gather our nickels.

We went to a place near my grandmas where we got the penny candy (and yes ... it was a penny) and it was in little brown paper bags too. I love that!!!

And I doubt we could ever find candy for a penny anymore!

Wonderful memories! I used to collect those bottles and drag them to the store around the corner in my wagon to get beef jerky for me and my dad.
Looks like you and your family are having a wonderful time on vacation!
