I've never read a weerewolf book before.
re: The Slap - the kid was being a real brat, with parents that never say no, and another adult, whom the kid kicked, slapped his face. The parents have charged him with assault, and everyone at the BBQ is taking sides. It doesn't help that most of the characters have nasty sides.
The family and the man are only connected through the host of the barbeque - they aren't, and never were, friends.
